ENG - Freedom Tree - April 2024 - Setúbal The work I'm presenting here is a dialogue between art and politics. Both concepts intertwine in a manifesto, inspiring and mirroring the notion of freedom, created symbolically through this work entitled: ‘The Tree of Freedom’. 1.5 tonnes of steel symbolically represents a flower, but over the last 50 years it has grown and taken root, giving rise to a tree. With this tree, I want the roots to grow even stronger and to feed on dignity and humanism, both now and in the future. The piece then rises to the heavens. With this elevation I proudly celebrate the mirror image of the Portuguese people. Where being free is a principle to reflect on, whether it's political, artistic or any other individual expression. This work reveals itself from the ground up, just like the others (trees) around us, because the location chosen was not random. A solitary tree does not have the strength of a union, so together it will strengthen this conviction. The branched steel structure, I can relate to consistency and perseverance based on a democratic policy. In the dome's mirrors, the contrast between strength, subtlety, transparency and the lightness of a free spirit. So, with the reflections of the light from these 50 petals, representing the 50 years, I hope that all of us will develop a reflective awareness of the universe of possibilities that reflect the interests and opportunities of a democratic and free people. Let's salute freedom.
PT - Árvore da Liberdade - Abril 2024 - Setúbal O trabalho que aqui apresento, é um diálogo entre a arte e a política. Ambos os conceitos se entrelaçam num manifesto, inspirando e espelhando a noção de liberdade, criada simbolicamente através desta obra intitulada: "A árvore da liberdade". 1,5ton. de aço a representar simbolicamente uma flor, no entanto, esta desenvolveu-se nos últimos 50 anos, e enraizou dando origem a uma árvore. Com esta árvore, pretendo que as raízes fortaleçam ainda mais e alimentando-se de dignidade e humanismo, tanto no presente como no futuro. A peça segue-se em elevação aos céus. Com esta elevação celebro com orgulho o espelhar do povo português. Onde ser livre é um princípio a refletir, seja político, artístico ou de outra expressão individual. Esta obra revela-se a partir do solo, tal como as outras(árvores) ao nosso redor, pois o local escolhido não foi ao acaso. Uma árvore solitária não tem a força de uma união, assim, em conjunto irá fortalecer esta convicção. A estrutura ramificada em aço, posso relacionar com a consistência e perserverança assente numa política democrática. Nos espelhados da cúpula, o contraste entre a força, a subtileza, a transparência ou a leveza de espírito livre. Assim, com os reflexos da luz destas 50 pétalas, representando os 50 anos, tenho a esperança que brotem em todos nós uma consciência reflexiva sobre o universo de possibilidades que espelhem os interesses e oportunidades de um povo democrático e livre. ENG - Ricardo Crista, author of the sculpture for the memorial to Zeca Afonso, whose intention is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, both for the connection he had with Setúbal and for the strong contribution he made to democracy. A sculptural piece created to remain site-specific, it interacts with a dynamic of visual movement as it is projected onto a horizon where the sea and sky ‘kiss’ at the touch of a blue gradient stain, creating an oscillating depth. Of an installation nature, the relationship between the work and the viewer is an invitation to observe the work from different perspectives, from land to sea, from sea to land and from the sides, thus modifying the underlying readings. In the centre of the front view, the image of Zeca Afonso, based on a photograph by Patrick Ulmann, emerges from the ground, the corten steel bars reaching towards the heavens, reflecting a gaze towards the horizon, hope, life and freedom. The memorial has been carefully incorporated and aligned in a precisely defined position to achieve a ‘perfect point’ from a certain angle. This allows the observed image to cast a shadow on the pavement at a specific time of day, evoking a trail that remains engraved in our culture and politics as a meaningful reminder to society.
PT - Escultura do memorial a Zeca Afonso, comemoração dos 50 anos do 25 de Abril, peça escultórica criada para permanecer em site specific interagindo com uma dinâmica de movimento visual ao ser projetada para um horizonte onde o mar e o céu se “beijam” no toque de uma mancha azul em degradê criando uma profundidade oscilante. De caracter instalativo, a relação obra/espectador onde é convidativa a observar a obra em diversas perspectivas, de terra para o mar, do mar para a terra e das laterais, modificando deste modo as leituras subjacentes. No centro da visão frontal a imagem de Zeca Afonso, a partir da fotografia de Patrick Ulmann, emerge do chão as barras de aço corten em direção aos céus traduzindo um olhar para o horizonte, esperança, vida e liberdade. O memorial foi cuidadosamente incorporado e alinhado numa posição precisamente definida para atingir um “ponto perfeito” a partir de um determinado ângulo. Isso permite que, num momento específico do dia, a imagem observada seja projetada uma sombra no pavimento, evocando um rasto que permanece gravado na nossa cultura e política como uma lembrança significativa para a sociedade. ENG - With its reddish-brown coat that shines in the soft mountain sun, it moves with agility and elegance among the dense arbutus and rosemary bushes. Its eyes, attentive and expressive, reveal the intelligence and mystery of a creature adapted to the silence of the mountains and the vastness of the horizons. At nightfall, its silhouette can be seen against the starry sky as it travels along secret trails, almost like the guardian of Arrábida's rich biodiversity. This animal is synonymous with wild grace in a setting of unspoilt beauty and this is what the artist @ricardo.crista has perfectly captured in this beautiful sculpture, representing a symbiosis between corten steel and nature.
PT - De pelagem castanho-avermelhada, que reluz sob o sol suave da serra, move-se com agilidade e elegância entre os densos arbustos de medronheiro e alecrim. Os seus olhos, atentos e expressivos, revelam a inteligência e o mistério de uma criatura adaptada ao silêncio das montanhas e à vastidão dos horizontes. Ao cair da noite, a sua silhueta pode ser avistada contra o céu estrelado, enquanto percorre trilhas secretas, quase como guardiã da rica biodiversidade da Arrábida. Este animal é sinónimo de graciosidade selvagem num cenário de beleza intocada e foi isso que o artista @ricardo.crista capturou com perfeição nesta lindíssima escultura, representando uma simbiose entre o aço corten e a natureza.

ENG - In the immensity of the Serra de Leomil, in Moimenta da Beira, an ancient presence now stands tall. An animal once common in these mountains and still today a symbol of freedom, resistance and a deep connection to the land. A tribute to a time when the howling of wolves was part of the natural sound of the mountains, in balance with the communities and the territory.
PT - Na imensidão da Serra de Leomil, em Moimenta da Beira, ergue-se agora uma presença antiga. Animal outrora comum nestas montanhas e ainda hoje símbolo de liberdade, resistência e profunda ligação à terra. Um tributo a um tempo em que o uivar do lobo fazia parte do som natural da serra, em equilíbrio com as comunidades e o território.
ENG - Tribute to the Canning Factory Workers of São Jorge With this sculpture, I propose to celebrate a living history, made of calloused hands, long days and silent strength — that of the canning factory workers of São Jorge. This monument is a gesture of gratitude. It is a way of saying ‘thank you’ to those women who, through hard work, helped build the identity of the island of São Jorge. The canned tuna that so often circulates around the world carries with it the taste of the sea, the memory, the effort and the soul of these women. The sculpture, with its three segments, does not show just one image. It shows movement, it shows continuity, it shows the passage of time and tradition. It shows how yesterday's work still echoes today, and how it transforms, without ever losing its essence. The division of the image into different scales provides a contrast that suggests the overload of effort and the constant rhythm, while at the same time enhancing the figure of the canner, making her not only part of the process, but also a visual icon of her historical and cultural importance. By being cut into three parts, the sculpture allows the viewer a more dynamic and engaging visual experience, where each segment brings a new perspective on the daily work of the canner, but also on the art of preserving and transforming tuna into something more than a product, making it a symbol of the dedication and tradition of São Jorge.
PT - Homenagem às Conserveiras de São Jorge. Com esta escultura proponho a celebração de uma história viva, feita de mãos calejadas, de dias longos e de uma força silenciosa — a das conserveiras de São Jorge. Este monumento é um gesto de gratidão. É a uma forma de dizer “obrigado” àquelas mulheres que, com trabalho duro, ajudaram a construir a identidade da ilha de São Jorge. O atum enlatado que tantas vezes circula mundo fora, leva consigo o sabor do mar, leva a memória, o esforço e a alma destas mulheres. A escultura, com os seus três segmentos, não mostra apenas uma imagem. Mostra movimento, mostra continuidade, mostra a passagem do tempo e da tradição. Mostra como o trabalho de ontem ecoa ainda hoje, e como se transforma, sem nunca perder o essencial. A divisão da imagem em diferentes escalas proporciona um contraste que sugere a sobrecarga de esforço e o ritmo constante, ao mesmo tempo que valoriza a figura da conserveira, tornando-a não só parte do processo, mas também um ícone visual da sua importância histórica e cultural. Ao ser recortada em três partes, a escultura permite ao espectador uma experiência visual mais dinâmica e envolvente, onde cada segmento traz uma nova perspetiva sobre o trabalho diário da conserveira, mas também sobre a arte de preservar e transformar o atum em algo mais que um produto, tornando-o um símbolo da dedicação e tradição de São Jorge.
ENG - The Hat of São Torcato A representative piece of a monumental head adorned with an iconic hat: the Miracle of São Torcato. A symbol of protection and unity for the community of Cabaços/Moimenta da Beira. This work is not just a piece of art; it is a spiritual and physical shelter. It symbolizes the resilience and strength of the community, protecting each of us from the storms of life. The rustic texture of Corten steel, with its nuances of color and resistance, reflects the history and culture of the inhabitants, creating a dialogue between the present and the past. The sculpture, located at the highest point of the Serra da Cabeça Gorda, will be a meeting place, a space for contemplation of identity and celebration. It will be an invitation for everyone to connect with local traditions, while feeling welcomed and protected.
PT - O Chapéu de São Torcato Peça representativa de uma cabeça monumental adornada por um chapéu iconico: o Milagreiro de São Torcato. Um símbolo de proteção e união para a comunidade de Cabaços/Moimenta da Beira. Esta obra não é apenas uma peça de arte; é um abrigo espiritual e físico. Simboliza a resiliência e a força da comunidade, protegendo cada um de nós às intempéries da vida. A textura rústica do aço corten, com suas nuances de cor e resistência, reflete a história e a cultura dos habitantes, criando um diálogo entre o presente e o passado. A escultura inserida no ponto mais alto da Serra da Cabeça Gorda será um ponto de encontro, um espaço para a contemplação de identidade e celebração. Será um convite para todos se conectarem com as tradições locais, ao mesmo tempo se sintam acolhidos e protegidos.
ENG - ‘Cradle of the Stork’ refers to welcoming, protecting and starting a new life. The sculpture aims to envelop the people of Longomel like an embrace, representing a safe and welcoming space. This gesture of welcome is amplified by the shape of the bird, which, with its posture and form, reminds us of a kind of cradle, a place of protection and care.
PT - “Berço da Cegonha” esta peça remete ao acolhimento, proteção e início de uma nova vida. A escultura tem o intuito de envolver os locais, de Longomel, como um abraço, representando o espaço seguro e acolhedor. Este gesto de acolher é ampliado pela forma da ave, que, com a sua postura e a sua forma, remete-nos a uma espécie de berço, um lugar de proteção e cuidado.
